Footfalls When my feet are off the road en Fri, 29 May 2020 08:49:25 GMT About that hobby For those wondering where the model railroad posts went, it goes like this. I did too much, too fast and started out at the wrong place--my fault. The hobby is still going, but I won't post about it much. This time I've slowed down and began at a logical point instead of an artistic one. Sat, 23 May 2020 08:18:18 GMT Another laptop Late last year I reckoned I'd better do a full test of a Lenovo laptop that I had bought. The thing sat around for nearly a year without any major use. When it was brought into play, I went online using my ethernet cable. Doing a test with Wifi and it broke. Several things were tried, including a complete re-install of the software, but no, the Wifi was dead. That meant the thing was totally useless on the road and it got trashed. A laptop is much better than a tablet, so I looked around for a decent used one that had a good warranty. Fri, 20 Mar 2020 14:18:50 GMT Two lost goslings A cold morning, last November, saw me taking a shortish walk in the usual place. My camera was in my pocket as normal, though there was little thought about taking any shots. About a mile had been covered as I wandered to the edge of the small lake where a viewing stand exists. The stand was in sight when I saw some unusual movement, accompanied by a goose honking quite loudly. Mon, 02 Mar 2020 09:01:56 GMT Manageable bites The goal posts have changed the last couple of years for carry on baggage allowance on many airlines around the world. If, like myself, you travel with carry on only, then you will have to do a serious rethink, if you haven't done it already. Mon, 27 Jan 2020 14:51:06 GMT Separate portions With the ongoing Coleridge effect becoming a bit of a bore and continually having to clean mud off my boots, I realized just how much time I spend off the road doing this sort of stuff and decided to separate things a little. Mon, 20 Jan 2020 18:53:47 GMT Photography and tablets Seeing as I am stuck using a tablet over the foreseeable future, an exercise was begun to forge the way ahead. There are a number of factors involved and some planning has to be done beforehand when using a tablet, much the same as you do if a laptop is used for your articles and image processing, only you have the limitations of touch instead of being able to use a mouse. Then there's the software. Instead of Photoshop, you will have to find a decent App to make your photos look good. Sun, 01 Dec 2019 08:38:06 GMT Beginning the turn of the year There was a slight edge to the air as I stepped onto the trail. No specific plan in mind, just a walk for the sake of it all. Across a sort of mown up area stood what looked like a metal box, pale blue, perhaps 4 feet high. I walked over the rough ground cover to take a closer look. A door on one of the sides was partially open and I reckon that at one time it was for an electrical thing in the area and just left to rot when everything else was removed. Sun, 10 Nov 2019 09:05:53 GMT Pub to bus The driver of the bus was very helpful as we wound around through various villages. My destination was one which would set me at the beginning of about a 5 mile hike. It was one of those days where the sky was a nice blue with small clouds drifting by and a slight breeze. I had never been to this spot before and planned to end up at a stop where I could catch a bus, which stopped at a station, on the branchline that ran near to where I live. Tue, 16 Jul 2019 06:29:23 GMT The valley search As I entered the wooded section, my eyes were greeted by a carpet of bluebells. Nearly everywhere I looked and walked within the wood, they were covering the ground. It was the Friday before Easter and those flowers are not normally there until around mid May. Spring was in full flow and a nice warm weekend on the cards. I had set out to go a hunting. Not for wildlife, but for a special place I stumbled across some years ago. To search for the nice little valley where it was silent apart from some birdsong and way off any main trail. Sat, 01 Jun 2019 07:16:36 GMT Camera decisions I guess there comes that time when I have to make up my mind about something which needs to be done. The past couple of years deciding whether or not to jettison my bridge camera has been on and off. The yoyo effect surfaces every now and then. The main reason is how much I carry in my main backpack. Not that I mind carrying it between locations, I don't. Time is always taken to stop, remove it and give my back a rest. Now, the whole scenario has surfaced again, with a vengeance. Fri, 17 May 2019 08:34:30 GMT Using a tablet on the road If you noticed, my using a tablet for blog posts has been a love-hate affair for some time. Imagery is slow process but I get fairly decent results. Text is a different story. First of all, I'm used to touch typing. This is something I learned in high school (I was the only male in the class) and have not regretted it at all. Fri, 12 Mar 2019 23:02:55 GMT Wrong side of the tracks Winter is not always the best time to go on a trek. Foul weather blues have been in abundance and once it was like dusk all day long. The temperature was hovering just above freezing with rain and wind, meaning a very cold walk. It was a good test of my new waterproof trousers, which did their job well. Tue, 12 Feb 2019 17:39:56 GMT An afternoon with the 'lings Feathers, feathers everywhere and little fur to see. They fly, they poop on you, they sing or squawk and the silly things are all over the place. So much so that I get quite tired of birds. The one time is different, it's spring as newly hatched waterfowl are rampaging over ponds, lakes and rivers with their mothers desperately trying to keep them in order and alive. Sat, 19 May 2018 20:02:04 GMT Perl blog software Today the term website has almost been replaced by the word blog. Most are run by a programming language named PHP. Prior to that, blogs (the few that existed) were run by Perl or ASP (Windows). Does this affect your blogging? Sat, 21 Jan 2017 23:13:12 GMT Coot chick needs food I was walking along, hoping for something other than the usual landscape. It became quite dull and boredom needs relief. Step after uninteresting step was leading to nothing. Occassionally a rough trail might give some respite, yet if you look up it's the same old thing. Some time later a lake came into view.
