Footfalls Obscure trails and unknown ways en Mon, 20 Sep 2021 11:43:09 GMT North Downs no Way A train and bus ride took me to a road where I could link up with a main trail named the North Downs Way. The bus stop is named Pilgrims Way and you have to search all over the place for the signage pointing to the route I wanted to hike on. Mon, 20 Sep 2021 11:43:08 GMT Miles in the sun With the thermometer forecast to be in the mid eighties for the day, I set out early to head for a town the other side of London. It meant leaving during the tail end of rush hour so that I would have plenty of time. Wed, 08 Sep 2021 20:32:21 GMT Great Missenden Sucks Sixteen months of not being able to get to the Basque Country means I'm stuck with doing stuff in England. In the past, while here, going off hiking trails has relieved the boredom, kept me somewhat in shape and I've discovered a few things. On my main blog I say that if somewhere is no good I'll trash it, the same applies here. The county of Buckinghamshire takes a while to reach but has some good routes and for the most part they are okay, except for one town. Sun, 29 Aug 2021 11:11:16 GMT Cygnet countdown Summer was almost there as I wandered almost aimlessly around a nature reserve. A lake is present and I stopped to have a look at it. Spring had yielded the usual waterfowl offspring for the year, doing their floaty thing. I'm not a birdy and knowing little about the feathered lot thought that swans only had one or two offspring. So when a swan came by I had quite a surprise, she had 8 cygnets with her. Some research was needed to find out more about this type of bird. Fri, 20 Aug 2021 10:14:08 GMT A quiet sit and think Living in the south part of London presents some problems. Any decent areas to put some miles behind me are mainly north of the city. There are a lot of parks but nearly all of them are sterile, too small, intensly boring or overcrowded. However, there is one which is quite large and is like being way out in the countryside. To get there involves me riding the rails for a bit, so I did just that and went for a quiet sit. Mon, 12 Jul 2021 11:03:56 GMT A little winding trail Most of the time when you're out on some hike or another, you tend to pass by things to reach the next destination. It may be a few miles or many. I was walking past something which I normally wouldn't have bothered about. However, it was one of those treks which wasn't important or long, so stopped and looked at a small path leading into some trees. Normally they are a waste of time. Sun, 27 Jun 2021 07:57:35 GMT Pub to bus The driver of the bus was very helpful as we wound around through various villages. My destination was one which would set me at the beginning of about a 5 mile hike. It was one of those days where the sky was a nice blue with small clouds drifting by and a slight breeze. I had never been to this spot before and planned to end up at a stop where I could catch a bus, which stopped at a station, on the branchline that ran near to where I live. Tue, 16 Jul 2019 06:29:23 GMT The valley search As I entered the wooded section, my eyes were greeted by a carpet of bluebells. Nearly everywhere I looked and walked within the wood, they were covering the ground. It was the Friday before Easter and those flowers are not normally there until around mid May. Spring was in full flow and a nice warm weekend on the cards. I had set out to go a hunting. Not for wildlife, but for a special place I stumbled across some years ago. To search for the nice little valley where it was silent apart from some birdsong and way off any main trail. Sat, 01 Jun 2019 07:16:36 GMT Expanse and danger While walking off trail has its advantages, the photographing of the trek tends to be the same. No track, all ground cover and thick foliage. Thinking about this, I thought it would be nice to go off the beaten path where there was some expanse to the landscape. Tue, 10 Apr 2019 21:31:49 GMT Wrong side of the tracks Winter is not always the best time to go on a trek. Foul weather blues have been in abundance and once it was like dusk all day long. The temperature was hovering just above freezing with rain and wind, meaning a very cold walk. It was a good test of my new waterproof trousers, which did their job well. Tue, 12 Feb 2019 17:39:56 GMT
